Map

May and November 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new life-boat ramp at Cart Gap. The focus of this work was to establish whether these works would disturb deposits attributatable to the internationally significant Cromer Forest-bed Formation (CF-bF).
Boreholes and test pits confirmed that the cliffs at this location consist of recent wind-blown sand, overlying a medium grey clay that is attributable to the Happisburgh Till formation (most likely of Anglian date, although some have argued for an origin during an earlier glaciation). On the beach the Happisburgh Till was seen to lie above a sterile coarse grey sand of probable marine origin. The absence of Cromer Forest-bed Formation deposits at this location was confirmed by a machine trench excavated during the subsequent installation of the new ramp. Any such deposits that once existed at this location were probably destroyed during the Anglian glacian (c. 450,000 years ago).
