Summary

In 1914 a Palaeolithic handaxe was found during the digging of a trench for a gas pipe here. The axe was of the S-twist type.

Found while digging trench for gas pipe on Castle Street:
1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe with "S-twist". Information from (S1).
This object was exhibited at a meeting of the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia in 1919, where it was described as a "…finely chipped St Acheul hand-axe…" (S2). It is now held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1919.32).
This handaxe is listed in (S3) and described by Wymer on (S4) and in (S5) as a broken cordate or ovate handaxe in sharp condition. It is also listed in (S6) and (S7), although no additional details are given.
