Full Description
April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A number of pits and linear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred on TG 2949 0838. They appear to form two lines of north-south aligned pits, perpendicular to the position of a former palaeochannel. Pit alignments are often part of prehistoric linear boundaries (S2), such as those recorded just over 250m to the west (NHER 52042) and 180m to the northwest (NHER 52047).
It is also possible that the pits could represent a cluster of uprooted trees along an undated boundary. There are, however, a significant number of geological features visible in this area, and it is also possible that some of these features may be geological, rather than archaeological, in nature.
Fragmentary north-south linear features were also visible to the south of the pit features, at TG 2949 0835, and these may relate to possible field boundaries or even a possible trackway.
E. Bales (NMP), 7 April 2009.
November-December 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
A trench that coincided with three of the possible pits in this group revealed no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks. A single undated pit at the southern end of this trench was the only feature identified during this work.
See report (S3) and NHER 64660 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 March 2021.
