Summary

A large, sub-circular pit is visible as an earthwork, and subsequently as ploughed out altogether, on aerial photographs in a field to the south of Vale Cottage, Kirby Bedon. This feature may represent a World War Two bomb crater, but equally may be a result of extraction or agricultural activity in the post medieval to modern period.

Map

April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A large, sub-circular pit is visible as an earthwork (S1)-(S2), and subsequently as ploughed out altogether (S3) on aerial photographs in a field to the south of Vale Cottage, Kirby Bedon, at TG 2728 0547

The pit itself measures approximately 11m in diameter, with a ‘halo’ of upcast spoil or bank around it, up to 3.6m in width. It is thought that this feature may represent a World War Two bomb crater, as it is visible as an earthwork in the aftermath of World War Two (S1). However, this may not be the case, and it may relate to localised gravel extraction or agricultural activity in the post medieval to modern period.
E. Bales (NMP), 7 April 2009.
