Full Description
April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a World War Two barrage balloon is visible on aerial photographs taken in June1942 (S1) centred at TG 2657 0779. The site at this time comprises a balloon with its tethering block (obscured on this photograph), and three large (up to 20m by 7m) ancillary structures or Nissen huts visible in a wooded area to the north, centred at TG 2656 0784. The site at this time has been mapped as an extent of area.
By 1945, (S2)-(S3), the site has changed character, and now comprises two rows of small (3.3m in diameter) circular tents sited either side of the central track, as well as some larger oval tents (up to 9m x 4.5m), presumably communal mess tents. The nissen huts in the wooded area have been removed.
There is also a possible water tower structure visible at TG 2663 0775 and a possible shelter in the form of a small 2.5m x 3.2 structure with a blast wall at TG 2654 0775. The altered shape of the site at this time has been mapped as an extent of area.
E. Bales (NMP), 23 April 2009.
