Map

April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible World War Two bomb craters are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), situated 660m apart, approximately 700m to the north-west of the Heavy Anti-Aircraft battery (NHER 34190).

The south-easternmost crater is visible as an oval pit, measuring 23m x 29m, centred at TG 2639 0678, with a bank surrounding it, of up to 6m in width on the north-eastern side. This crater is visible as an earthwork until at least 1956 (S5), and is still faintly visible as a cropmark in 1996 (S7). 660m to the northwest, a second possible bomb crater is visible centred at TG 2592 0724 (S1) and (S6), although this is slightly more circular in appearance, measuring 16m x 18m, and has no visible bank associated with it. This feature is no longer visible by 1996 (S7), by which time the plantation had grown to cover it. These features can be compared with others to the east of Norwich (NHER 51915 and NHER 52086), although these are rather smaller, only measuring an average of 9m in diameter. It is therefore possible that these features in fact represent agricultural or industrial activity, such as extraction pits.
