Summary

A rapid earthwork identification survey in 2009 identified a linear bank marking the parish boundary, a probable post medieval extraction pit and a large, indistinct mound which may be geological, although does have potential to be a prehistoric barrow. The mound and pits are visible on earlier aerial photographs, but the mound is not.

Map

April-May 2009. Walkover Survey.
Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Coupe 51920).
A bank marks the parish boundary between Thetford and Lynford, and could date to the medieval period or later. A probable post medieval extraction pit was identified in the centre of the survey area, and a large, indistinct mound to the west was interpreted as either a natural deposit or a possible prehistoric barrow.
See (S1) for further details.

October 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Two pits and a linear earthwork bank are visible on aerial photographs of the area (S2-S4). The linear earthwork to the west is likely to represent the Thetford/Lynford parish boundary. The northern most pit was mapped, as unlike the pit to the south, it does not appear on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (S5), but it is likely to represent a post-medieval extraction pit. The mound to the east was not visible on the available aerial photographs.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 Oct 2010.
