Summary

An excavation in 2009 recovered Early Iron Age pottery within a thick silt layer that sealed what could be earlier prehistoric features including a pit or post-hole and possible beam slot. The low density of finds suggests that this is not a site of intense activity but it is possible that more deposits could be more deeply buried.

Evaluation of proposed development site.
Early Iron Age pottery was recovered from a thick silt layer sealing what could be earlier prehistoric features including a pit or post-hole and beam slot. It is possible that this layer of silt may have resulted from the site being underwater or subject to repeated flooding during the Roman period and at times during the medieval period. This zone is currently located on the edge of an extensive stretch of marshland and would have been at the edge of a tidal estuary during the Roman period. The low density of finds suggests that this is not a site of intense activity. Animal bone was recovered from the surface and could represent an archaeological deposit dating to the Saxon or medieval period when the land was drier.
