Full Description
October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Two broad ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 1759 1755, to the west of Houghen plantation, Felthorpe.
The northern-most ditch measures 92m by 13m in width and was aligned east-west, and the southern ditch runs roughly parallel to this for 48m, before turning a right angle at TG 1757 1750 and continuing for a further 48m to the north. It is possible that there is a break in the ditch between TG 1755 1755 and TG 1756 1758, although this may be due to masking of the archaeology. It is possible that these ditches make up a rectilinear enclosure measuring at least 88m by 67m internally, although it must be noted that the features are blurred and only visible on one set of photographs, and may represent geological rather than archaeological features.
The ditches themselves are clearly on a different alignment to the field boundaries visible on the historic maps, and have a similar alignment to some of the possible linear ditches recorded 200m to the west as part of NHER 52365. They have therefore been tentatively assigned a medieval date.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
