Summary

Two linear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on land to the north of Fakenham Road, Taverham. One is a fragmentary linear ditch that runs parallel to both the edge of the field and the Attlebridge/Taverham parish boundary and is therefore of probable medieval to post-medieval date. A geophysical survey undertaken in 2014/2015 demonstrated that a similarly-aligned cropmark initially interpreted as a possible bank feature is actually associated with a modern pipe.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A fragmentary linear ditch and possible bank feature are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), on land to the north of Fakenham Road, Taverham, centred at TG 1521 1548.
The ditch feature is visible in three sections, running north-south from TG 1532 1555 to TG 1511 1532 and the bank feature is visible approximately 68m to the northwest from TG 1528 1561 to TG 1511 1545.
These features run parallel to the eastern edge of the field and the Attlebridge/Taverham parish boundary, which may suggest that they are medieval to post medieval in date, however they are also on a similar northeast-southwest alignment to various linear features to the northwest (NHER 52379, 52382 and 52384) which may relate to a suggested Iron Age-Roman field system, therefore this is also a possibility. The fact that the features are only visible on one photographic frame makes it difficult to be certain of their nature. Finds from the area to the northwest included small quantities of worked flint and single sherds of medieval and post medieval pottery (NHER 50493).
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.

May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Area F3b).
This survey identified a linear anomaly that clearly corresponded with the possible bank feature identified at this location, although the nature of the response suggested it was associated with a modern pipe.
A faint linear anomaly appears to correspond with the southern cropmark but this was not identified as a potentially archaeologically-significant feature.
See report (S2) and NHER 63366 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 May 2019.
