Summary

Linear ditches and banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on land within Gilham’s Heath Plantation, Felthorpe. It is difficult to be certain of their origin, as they appear to be relatively fresh and recent, and as there are other modern quarry earthworks visible just over 500m to the east, it is possible that they relate to modern extraction.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditches and banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2) on land within Gilham’s Heath Plantation, Felthorpe, centred on TG 1509 1748.
It is difficult to be certain of their origin, as they appear to be relatively fresh and recent, and as there are other modern quarry earthworks visible just over 500m to the east (S3), it is possible that they relate to modern extraction. However, their morphology is unlike the more characteristic quarry pits to the east, as they form a series of parallel ditches, with a maximum width of 4m and a maximum length of 75m, the southern ditches, centred around TG 1506 1742, having banks in between.
It is possible that they relate instead to the post medieval plantation that is visible in this area from the 1st Edition Tithe Map (S4), and which has been recently cleared (S1).
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.
