Summary

A possible trackway and other linear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs to the east of Holt Road, Felthorpe. The possible trackway runs parallel to a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map of 1840, suggesting that it is medieval to post medieval in date. A third linear ditch on the same alignment is visible 20m to the east, and is likely to be related. Possible medieval to post medieval drainage ditches on a different alignment are also visible to the south east.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A possible trackway and other linear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), to the east of Holt Road, Felthorpe.
The longest linear features, which may represent a possible trackway, run parallel to each other north northeast-south southwest from TG 1788 1976 to TG 1792 1958, and are sited approximately 3.5m apart. These ditches are also parallel to a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map of 1840 (S3), suggesting that they are medieval to post medieval in date. A third linear ditch on the same alignment is visible 20m to the east, and is likely to be related.
To the south east, two fragmentary linear ditches on a different, northwest-southeast alignment are visible, 12m apart, which may represent earlier activity on the site, as they appear to be unrelated to the modern field pattern, or that visible on the historic maps. It is quite possible, however, that these ditches performed a drainage function, as there are several other modern drainage channels visible in fields nearby, and that they are medieval to post medieval in date also.
