Full Description
November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A sub-rectangular enclosure is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5) on an area of cultivated ground to the south of Botany Bay, Horsford.
The enclosure is centred on TG 1951 1876, and measures 13.4m by 16.8m internally (17.3m by 20.3m externally). The ditch itself varies in width from 1 to 2m, and the enclosure appears to exhibit a possible entrance of at least 2.3m on its south-western side, at TG 1950 1876.
It is possible that it is related to Horsford Warren House, which is marked on Faden’s 1797 map (S6). The enclosure observed nearby (NHER 52410) may relate to the warren itself, and this cropmark is very similar in tone and appearance, indicating that it may be a contemporary feature.
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.
