NHER 53209 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Site of undated fragmentary linear and possible pit features

Two faint fragmentary linear ditches and several possible pit features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), to the south of Mill Lane Farm, Horsford. The features are centred on TG 1942 1687, and are situated within the area of the World War Two searchlight battery (NHER 53203). It is therefore possible that these features are related to World War Two activity on the site, although they do not appear to correspond with any of the features or trackways visible on the wartime photographs.
It is also possible that the linear features may be contemporary with the field boundary ditches recorded 350m to the east (NHER 53205), as the western one at least appears to be on a similar, roughly north-south alignment, but it is difficult to be sure.
Five possible pit features are visible, possibly laid out in parallel lines. They measure between 2m and 3.5m in diameter. It is difficult to be certain whether the possible pit features represent archaeological activity, or underlying geology, as there are many geological features visible on the aerial photographs. The fact that the linear ditches appear to cut through the pits, or vice versa, suggests that more than one phase of activity may be represented on this site.
As these features are all only visible on one set of photographs, they have been recorded with caution.
