Full Description
April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a small group of fragmentary ditched cropmarks, represent the remains of undated former field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Gowthorpe Manor, Swardeston (S1). The site is centred on TG 2134 0222. The ditches are share the same alignment and are all broadly aligned NW-SE. A Roman coin was recovered during renovations at Gowthorpe Manor approximately 500m to the west (NHER 9716), although there is too little visible at this site to specifically attribute the ditches to a Roman date. It is also feasible that these represent the remains of agricultural drains.
S. Horlock (NMP), 30 April 2009.
2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed quarry extension areas.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the cropmarks in this group (all of which fell within the area examined).
See NHER 57922 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 23 January 2023.
August-October 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed aggregate extraction areas.
One of the excavated trenches coincided with the north-west to south-east aligned cropmark at TG 2138 0222. There was again no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
A number of similarly-aligned ditches of possible Roman date were though recorded in this field and that to the east.
See report (S2) and NHER 57922 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 January 2023.
