Summary

In January 2010 a historic building survey was conducted at Hill Farm. The survey revealed that the barn dates to between the late 18th century and early 19th century with late 18th century refubishment and late 19th to early 20th century alterations. The presence of late 18th to early 19th century brickwork in neighbouring single storey buildings could suggest that these were contemporary or at least slightly postdate the barn.

Map

January 2010. Building Survey.
Recording of farm buildings prior to redevelopment.
The earliest phase of the barn appears to date to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The ancillary buildings attached to the south-east and north-east sides of the barn include some possible late 18th to early 19th century brick that could suggest these structures are contemporary with the barn. The brick is similar to that used on the earliest phase of the barn and it is possible that this brick was reused from the barn. The straight joints present in the western corners of the barn suggest that the barn at least slightly predates the ancilliary buildings. The 1842 tithe map shows a 'U'-shaped range of buildings that could represent the barn with the attached buildings at its north-western side. A datestone of 'R.T.P.W. 1873' in the north-east gable of the barn refers to the refurbishment of the barn by Richard Thomas Perry-Warnes the great-grandfather of the present owner of Hill Farm. A number of timber structures were observed in two of the single storey buildings that could indicate that they may have been used as loose boxes or stabling.
