NHER 53338 (Monument record) - Medieval to post medieval earthwork ditches

Several possible medieval to post medieval earthwork ditches are visible as earthworks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S8), on land surrounding Clapgate Farm, Wymondham. Clapgate Farm is centred on TG 0906 0011.
The farm is depicted on Bryant’s 1826 map of Norfolk, but the earthworks around suggest that the site formerly covered a larger area.
To the west of the farm, linear earthwork ditches are visible (S1), (S2) and (S5) running roughly east west across the field centred on TG 0898 0017, with two north-south ditches between. These features are apparent as soil marks on the later photographs (S7)-(S8). It is possible that they represent medieval to post medieval linear features, although they may have fulfilled a drainage function in more recent times.
Likewise, earthwork ditches to the south east of the farm (S1)-(S4), centred on TG 0914 0008, and to the south west (S2) and (S5), centred on TG 0901 2999, may also have performed a drainage function.
