Summary

In 2009 a geophysical survey detected a circular anomaly, interpreted as possibly a stone platform or barrow. A number of other, somewhat amorphous anomalies were also identified. These more dubious anomalies were investigated during a subsequent trial trenching evaluation, which failed to identify any archaeologically significant features or deposits.

Map

December 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Survey of site of proposed irrigation reservoir.
A geomagnetic survey of the south-eastern corner of this field detected linear features, possibly ditches. The extensive cropmark evidence for enclosures and field boundaries in the surrounding area suggests that these represent former field boundaries of prehistoric, Roman or later date.
A circular anomaly was also identified, interpreted as possibly a stone platform or barrow. This feature lies outside of the reservoir's footprint. A number of other, somewhat amorphous anomalies were also identified.
See report (S1) for further details.
S. Howard (NLA), 27 January 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 16 March 2015.

January 2010. Trial Trenching.
Nine trenches excavated, none of which revealed archaeologically significant features or deposits. It is likely that the anomalies identified by the geophysical survey were the result of abrupt changes in the composition of the natural geology. A single unstratified pottery sherd of possible Iron Age date was recovered from Trench 2.
It should be noted that the area examined does not coincide with any of the cropmark features previously identified in this area (see NHER 27688).
See report (S2) for further details.
S. Howard (NLA), 19 March 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 16 March 2015.
