Summary

A Late Saxon rubbish pit was discovered during the installation of a gas line in 1946. The pit contained Late Saxon pottery, including a rim in a coarse black ware, as well as numerous animal bones and horn cores.

December 1946. Casual Find.
A rubbish dump was cut into by a gas main trench located in front of the Roman Catholic Church, London Road.
Pottery sherds recovered from the feature include a rim in coarse black ware with a grey centre and a flattened band around the top of the rim. The rubbish dump extended 18.3m (20yds) and over 7.6m (3ft) deep. It contained many horn cores and animal bones.
