Map

April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Ipswich Road and Dunston Park, Stoke Holy Cross (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2198 0187 and is bisected by the Norwich to Stowmarket railway line. One of the boundaries (TG 2193 0194) is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (S3) and an intermittent line of trees indicates another to the north. The Dunston Tithe map of 1849 (S4) depicts no field boundaries across the entire map, potentially to do with the presence of Dunston Park over much of the area, although it can be assumed that all the boundaries pre-date this map. The boundaries obviously all pre-date the construction of the Great Eastern Railway in 1840s (NHER 13578). The cropmarks represent at least two phases of field boundaries, both probably broadly post medieval in date, although it is possible that some of more irregular elements, such as those fragmentary boundaries at TG 2185 0178, could be late medieval in date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 April 2009.

February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, three of which coincide with cropmarks in this group. These include the north-west to south-east aligned cropmark at TG 2192 0195, which also coincides with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S3). A short north-west to south-east aligned anomaly at TG 2200 0205 and a short north-north-east to south-south-west aligned anomaly at TG 2187 0175 both coincide with more extensive cropmarks.
See NHER 66387 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 February 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
Three of the four trenches excavated at this location coincided with the northernmost cropmarks in this group. No corresponding sub-surface remains were identified.
See NHER 66387 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 February 2023.

October-November 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to west of Ipswich Road.
The trenches excavated coincided with a number of the south-easternmost cropmarks in this group. Of these only two were found to have corresponding sub-surface remains – a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned feature at TG 2205 0179 and a similarly-aligned feature to the south, at TG 2202 0170. The former contained a range of post-medieval to modern finds.
See report (S5) and NHER 68179 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 26 March 2024.
