Summary

The site of possible World War Two defences is visible on aerial photographs alongside a field boundary next to the Bergh Apton Road in Alpington. These defences possibly consisted of a gun emplacement or spigot mortar emplacement and a trench, although it is extremely hard to discern these features clearly. It is feasible that both features relate to agricultural activity and not military defence.

Map

The site of possible World War Two defences are visible on aerial photographs alongside a field boundary next to the Bergh Apton Road in Alpington (S1). The site is centred on TG 2976 0188. These defences possibly consisted of a gun emplacement or spigot mortar emplacement and a trench, although it is was extremely hard to discern these features clearly due to the quality of the original photography and the positioning next to the hedge line. It is entirely feasible that both features relate to agricultural activity and not military defence.
Located next to a kink in the hedge at TG 2982 0190 is a small circular depression or pit, with a slight embankment to the western side. It is possible that this marks the site of a former gun emplacement or spigot mortar emplacement. Although the positioning of such a defence at this location would provide a very limited field of fire. At TG 2971 0187, quite near to the road, is a rectangular slot trench, 7m long and 1m wide. Alongside the trench is an embankment, presumably created from the upcast material.
