Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably representing the remains of at least two phases of field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to either side of Upper Kiln Lane and in-between the villages of Alpington and Bergh Apton. The date of these boundaries is uncertain, although a late prehistoric to Roman date is suggested for one phase and medieval to post medieval for the seemingly later phase.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably representing the remains of at least two phases of field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to either side of Upper Kiln Lane and in-between the villages of Alpington and Bergh Apton (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2995 0106. The site consists of dispersed fragmentary ditches and former field boundaries representing at least two phases. A number of the boundaries to the north of Kiln Grove, centred on TG 2969 0096, share some similarities and alignments with components of the medieval to post medieval landscape and field layout and these may date to around this period. Late Saxon and medieval to post medieval artefacts have been found within the general vicinity of the site (NHER 31454 and 40303), although there is no direct relationship between the finds and the cropmarks. The remainder of the site is likely to represent earlier field divisions. Given the morphology of the cropmarks an Iron Age to Roman date could be suggested.
