Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A dispersed multi-period cropmark site, consisting of fragmentary ditches, enclosures, field boundaries and trackways representing more than one phase of activity, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Poringland (S1-S7). The site is centred on TG 2806 0220. This dispersed group of cropmarks are likely to represent elements of several unrelated phases of land division and enclosure, the dates of which are uncertain, although it is likely that some components are Roman in date. Finds in the general vicinity date from the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods (NHER 19332, 30241, 31192, 31452 and 33277). A prehistoric burnt mound has also been recorded (NHER 9883).

The clearest components of the site are located in the area of TG 2782 0224 (S3-S5) and are likely to represent fragments of field boundaries. A possible rectangular enclosure measuring 100m by 40m appears to be located at TG 2795 0230, (S3-S4). Although the cropmarks are quite incomplete, a further section of ditch may be visible forming the eastern side of the enclosure, however this was not included in the mapping as it is feasible that the cropmark was derived from underlying geology. Another possible enclosure, measuring approximately 50m across, may be located at TG 2823 0245. The remainder of the site largely consists of dispersed fragmentary linear ditches. The short stretch of parallel double ditch to the north of the site may represent part of a trackway.

February 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline.
One of the narrow survey areas coincided with the fragmentary curvilinear cropmark mapped at TG 2846 0226. No potentially corresponding anomalies were identified.
See NHER 69533 for further details.
