Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of boundary ditches, probably representing the remains of a field system of unknown date, but possibly Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Bramerton Lane, Framingham Pigot (S1). The site is centred on TG 2886 0382.
The main component of the site is a relatively broad, up to 4m wide, intermittent ditch, probably representing the remains of a boundary ditch. A shorter stretch of ditch runs parallel approximately 75m to the southwest. Three narrow ditches perpendicular to these two boundaries are present across the site, all approximately 140m apart. It is probable that these ditches represent part of a system of field divisions. The other fragmentary components mapped as part of this site may represent unrelated activity. A number of rectilinear and linear cropmarks were visible in the area of TG 2876 0390 that were considered to be largely of geological origin, although it is possible that some archaeological elements additional to what was mapped exist in this area.
Finds dating to the prehistoric, Iron Age, Roman, Saxon periods have been found within the general vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 28992, 33109, 35974). Given the morphology of the possible field system it is feasible that they date to Iron Age and/or Roman periods, although this is not certain. These ditches follow broadly the same alignment as other fragmentary groups of field boundaries within the area, and these have been interpreted as being Roman in date, see NHER 42439, 42442 for details.
