Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, possibly representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs within an area of medieval to post medieval field boundaries (NHER 15770) to the east of Grove Cottage, Poringland. An alternative interpretation is that this ring ditch relates to post medieval or modern date infilled pit or pond, although the aerial photograph evidence is inconclusive.

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, possibly representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs within an area of medieval to post medieval field boundaries (NHER 15770) to the east of Grove Cottage, Poringland (S1-S3). An alternative interpretation is that this ring ditch relates to post medieval or modern infilled pit or pond, although the aerial photograph evidence is inconclusive. The site is centred on TG 2621 0144. This ring ditch was previously recorded under NHER 15770. The ring ditch is 15.5 to 17m in diameter (S2-S3). It must be noted that the ring ditch may have appearance of an infilled pit or pond (S3). The light-coloured soilmarks relating to a possible mound are visible in 1962 (S1), which could add to the barrow interpretation, however it is feasible that the marks relate to differential material exposed within a former infilled pit. However it must be noted that other pit-like features visible within this field produce a dark coloured soilmark in 1962.
