Full Description
December 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure of possible medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Caistor Lane, within the parishes of Caistor St Edmund and Bixley (S1). The site is centred on TG 2554 0366. The line of a probable Roman road runs through the enclosure (NHER 9904 and NHER 53212). Finds recovered from the wider area of the enclosure include prehistoric worked flints and potboilers, Roman and medieval to post medieval material (NHER 29000, 30311). The enclosure is rectilinear or rectangular, measuring 30m by at least 35m (the southern arm of the enclosure is not visible). This enclosure appears to lie on the route of the Roman road (NHER 53212). The cropmarks indicate that the enclosure post-dates the road and therefore suggest a post-Roman date. It is worth noting that the enclosure follows broadly the same alignment as an area of medieval fields and enclosures recorded to the west (NHER 53215). However, it is also possible that this implied relationship is the result of differential erosion of the remains of the road surface on top of the enclosure.
S. Horlock (NMP), 29 December 2009.
