Summary

Map

December 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a possible C-shaped enclosure may visible on aerial photographs to the north of Naiden’s Lane, Shotesham (S1). The soilmark is centred on TM 2522 9995 and is 55m across, forming a C-shape with slight bulbous terminals (S1). The soilmark is visible on a run of photography that is taken at high level and therefore does not show any great level of detail of the archaeological sites; consequently very little can be said of the site with any confidence. On morphological grounds alone the C-shaped ditch with bulbous terminals the site is reminiscent of other C-shaped monuments thought to represent the remains of late Neolithic to Bronze Age date ceremonial and/or funerary monuments identified within Norfolk from aerial photographs. These are usually found within Bronze Age funerary contexts, such as the example identified approximately 2km to the east (NHER 52430). However without better quality aerial photographic evidence for this site, it would be unwise to apply such an interpretation with any certainty.
S. Horlock (NMP), 29 December 2009.
