Full Description
December 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of enclosures and boundary ditches of unknown, but possible Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Arminghall medieval settlement (S1). The site is centred on TG 2520 0501.
The cropmarks are fragmentary, but would appear to suggest the presence of at least one rectilinear enclosure or possible a series of conjoined enclosures, bisected by the belt of woodland. The clearest component of the site is an incomplete enclosure, centred on TG 2521 0502, and measuring 50m by at least 60m. Ditches following the same alignment to the east, may indicate a further enclosure or possibly conjoined fields or enclosed areas. The date of these enclosures and fields is not know, but they clearly pre-date the medieval boundaries associated with the adjacent deserted medieval settlement of Arminghall (NHER 9877), suggesting that they may be Saxon or earlier in date. An Iron Age to Roman date seems most likely given the morphology of the cropmarks.
S. Horlock (NMP), 29 December 2009.
