Summary

The vegetation marks of possible former field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Long Road, Framingham Earl. Trial trenching undertaken in 2015 failed to identify any evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks. It was clear that the site had suffered extensive tree root disturbance.

Map

December 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The vegetation marks of possible former boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Long Road, Framingham Earl (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2661 0307. The boundaries form a small rectangular arrangement of ditches, potentially representing former field or land boundaries, although given the need for modern drainage in the area to the north of the site, it is feasible that they represent drains, but they do not appear to feed into the modern drainage system. None of the mapped features bears any relationship to boundaries depicted on the 1805 East Poringland Tithe map (S3) or the Ordnance Survey First edition map (6 inch, 1889-1891) (S4).
S. Horlock (NMP), 29 December 2009.

May 2014. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over this area of grassland prior to proposed development. However, this survey did not record any magnetic anomalies in the area of these cropmarks. All responses were interpreted as the results of modern phenomenon.
See report (S5) and NHER 60694 for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 20 April 2015.

May 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Although six of the excavated trenches were placed to investigate the cropmark features, no corresponding sub-surface remains were identified. This area had recently been cleared of trees and the evaluation revealed evidence for extensive tree root disturbance across the site.
Several fragments of modern ceramic building material were the only unstratified finds recovered during this work.
See report (S6) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 September 2016.
