Summary

In December 2009 a watching brief observed a section of masonry that is thought to be the foundations of the 15th century tower of St. George's Church, Tombland. Fragments of brick, mortar, flint, cattle bone and human bone were also recovered from the fill of a modern cable trench. The presence of human and cattle bone is comparable to an adjacent site (NHER 140) where human and ox bones were discovered.

Monitoring of groundworks associated with renewal of elecrical cable supplying St George's chuch.
The hand-dug trench exposed a section of masonry composed of medium sized flints bonded with soft sandy mortar, thought to represent the foundations of the 15th century tower of St. George's church. In addition, a number of fragments of brick, mortar and flint building material, along with cattle and human bone fragments were found redeposited in the fill of a modern cable trench. The presence of the human and animal bone is comparable to an adjacent site (NHER 140) where human and ox (castrated bull) bones were also discovered.
