Full Description
June 1961. Field Observation.
Exposed in trench dug for new sewer parallel to and north of road by the Dredging and Construction Co. of King's Lynn for Thetford Borough Council.
Context 1: opposite stanch footings of walls running north-south cut through. Possible curtain wall for bailey.
Context 2: opposite hen houses in garden of Whittlesford House. Ditch, about 9.2m (30ft) wide and at least 2.4m (8ft) deep, cut through. Ditch runs north-south.

Context 3: skeletons found in Water Meadows opposite Red Castle.

Found in a recently dredged ditch running parallel to the Lesser Ouse at [1].
Two body sherds of unglazed probable Grimston ware.
One body sherd of medieval unglazed.

Maintained during installation of wooden bollards around western and southern boundaries of site.
None of the small holes excavated revealed archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
No finds were recovered.
