Summary

The cropmarks of a group of sub-rectangular pit-like features, which potentially represent the remains of Saxon sunken-floored buildings, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the Roman temple complex, Caistor St Edmund (NHER 9787). The pits mapped and recorded under this number are distinctly sub-rectangular in shape and measure between 1.5-4.5m across. This could indicate that they relate to former Saxon sunken-floored buildings, known as ‘grubenhauser’. Saxon date finds have been recovered from within the wider vicinity of the site (NHER 9807 & 28200).
