Summary

The possible cropmarks of enclosures, fields and boundaries potentially of Iron Age date, pre-dating extramural settlement and fields to the south of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 52211), are visible on aerial photographs. The site consists of fragmentary and faint cropmarks suggesting a series of rectilinear enclosures and ditches, although there is some uncertainty over the origin of some of the cropmarks. It seems plausible that these features, if archaeological, relate to enclosures and fields associated with the Iron Age settlement anticipated to have existed to the north prior to the establishment of the Roman town (NHER 29994).

The possible cropmarks of enclosures, fields and boundaries potentially of Iron Age date, pre-dating extramural settlement and fields to the south of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 52211), are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site, which is centred on TG 2311 0286, consists of fragmentary and faint cropmarks suggesting a series of rectilinear enclosures and ditches. It must be noted that some of these cropmarks could feasibly relate to underlying geological features, as such there is a high level of uncertainty over the significance of this site. It seems plausible that these features, if archaeological, relate to enclosures and fields associated with the Iron Age settlement anticipated to have existed to the north prior to the establishment of the Roman town (NHER 29994). It is also possible that one of these ditches may correspond with the undated ditch recorded in this area during the watching brief for the Yelverton to East Carleton gas pipeline (NHER 29003).
