Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible road or boundary bank of either Roman or medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S6) to the southeast of Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786). The site is centred on TG 2324 0311. This may have formed the northern part of a road leading to the Roman town from the south, although no signs of this route were detected further south. The road or former embankment, indicated by a linear parchmark in 1961 (S1) varies in width from 5-7.5m. A ditch to the west, admittedly following a slightly different course, may also be a related feature (S2-S3). A potentially comparable route may have existed to the southwest of the town, see NHER 52205 for details. This road or boundary may also represent part of a series of boundaries and a trackway to the immediate east (NHER 52227) and these are also interpreted as being either Roman or medieval to post medieval in date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 March 2009.
