Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A fragment of an undated rectangular enclosure and associated ditch are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1) on land to the west of Old Norwich Road, Horsham St Faith.
The enclosure fragment appears to represent the north-western corner of a rectangular feature, with a corner at TG 2167 1444.
A northwest-southeast linear feature is also present, running from TG 2171 1442 to TG 2168 1463. A short section of ditch is visible running parallel to the first, approximately 2.5m to the east, for approximately 12m at the northern end.
It is possible that these features represent medieval to post medieval roadside settlement, in a similar way to those recorded at Rackheath, to the east (NHER 50729), which have been suggested to be medieval to post medieval in date, or possibly Early Iron Age to Roman. Since these features are not visible on Faden’s map of Norfolk, it is possible that they represent an earlier settlement, although it seems more likely that they represent medieval to post medieval activity.
It is also probable that the enclosure is in fact the same feature recorded as NHER 13225, approximately 50m to the north, no trace of which was visible on the available aerial photographs.
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.
