Summary

In 1970 human skeletal remains and animal bones were found while putting in a gas main trench. The bones were very close to the surface and may have been previously disturbed. The excavation of a narrow trench for a new electrical cable in 2016 encountered several articulated human skeletons in roughly the same area, all of which were less than 0.7m below the ground surface. The top of a skull was also exposed several metres to the west of these burials and it is recorded that disarticulated human bones were encountered along the length of the path – suggesting the presence of a much larger cemetery. No dating evidence was recovered, although these remains were almost certainly of Late Saxon to medieval date. The cemetery was most likely related to the Dominican Friary (NHER 5750), although it is possible it was associated with one of the other religious organisations known to have occupied the site during this period.

Found at c. TL 8676 8301 [1] while putting in a gas main trench:
Skeletal remains and animal bones.

Finds at NCM (not accessioned or washed) [2].
Information from E. B. Green (NCM) and W. F. Milligan (NCM).
Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 31 July 2023.

May-June 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of trench for new electrical cable.
This trench was dug to a maximum depth of 0.7m, disturbing only a deep, mixed humic soil.
Disarticulated human and animal bone was found along the entire length of the trench, becoming particularly frequent in the central and eastern sections.
Three articulated human skeletons were encountered between approximately TL 8675 8300 and TL 8676 8300, close to where remains had been encountered in 1970. No grave cuts could be identified for these burials, which were all aligned east-to-west. The damaged top of a human skull was also exposed several metres to the west of these burials but it is unclear whether it was part of an articulated skeleton. Its presence does at least suggest further burials are present in this area, at a slightly lower level.
No datable finds were recovered.
All disarticulated human bone was replaced within the trench before it was backfilled.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.104).
