Full Description
April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible enclosure, perhaps exhibiting more than one phase, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2) on land to the east of Spixworth Road, Old Catton. The enclosure is centred on TG 2400 1326. It measures approximately 85m by 95m, and exhibits a possible entrance at TG 2396 1331.
It is possible that more than one phase of use is evident, as it appears that a similar feature on a slightly different alignment is visible also. For the mostpart, however, it appears to share an alignment with the enclosures identified 100m to the southeast (NHER 21126), and it is possible that all these features are Iron Age to Roman in date, given the presence of a Roman cremation and field system 100m to the southwest (NHER 44786)
An undated linear ditch feature that appears to be on a different, north northeast-south southwest alignment is also visible running across the site.
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.
September 2012-March 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area.
This survey revealed no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks.
See report (S3) and NHER 66876 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 May 2023.
