Summary

A World War Two emergency water tank, an air raid shelter, and a possible ARP warden’s post are visible as extant structures, buildings and earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. They all lie in close proximity to each other, the water tank on an empty plot of land, and the air raid shelter and possible ARP post on the adjacent pavement and verge. Although the interpretation of the ARP post is uncertain, and it is not included in a list of such posts in a bibliographic source, this seems the most likely interpretation of the structure; the adjacent air raid shelter was presumably for the use of the warden.

A World War Two emergency water tank, an air raid shelter, and a possible ARP warden’s post are visible as extant structures, buildings and earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 2072 0850. They all lie in close proximity to each other, the water tank on an empty plot of land, and the air raid shelter and possible ARP post on the adjacent pavement and verge. Although the interpretation of the ARP post is uncertain, and it is not included in a list of such posts in Banger 2003 (S5), this seems the most likely interpretation of the structure, which is surrounded by or connected to an external blast wall. The adjacent air raid shelter was presumably for the use of the warden.
