Summary

A probable World War Two emergency water tank is visible as an extant structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Tanks such as these were used to supply water for fire fighting following bombing raids. This example is unusual in that it was situated on a small plot of land reached by a lane between two residential properties; most of those identified in Norwich stood in more prominent public locations.

Map

May 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two emergency water tank is visible as an extant structure on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2135 0664. Not visible on photographs taken in 1942 (S4), it may have been in place by 1944 (S1); no trace is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1951 (S5). Tanks such as these were used to supply water for fire fighting following bombing raids. This example is unusual in that it was situated on a small plot of land reached by a lane between two residential properties, hence the slight uncertainty about its interpretation; most of those identified in Norwich stood in more prominent public locations.
