Summary

A possible World War Two emergency water tank is visible on aerial photographs within the golf course at Hellesdon. A Cold War Royal Observer Corps post is recorded in a similar location (NHER 35393). A survey undertaken in 2015 confirmed that there is now no obvious physical trace of either. There is also some doubt over whether this was actually built during World War Two, as a square object labelled a 'reservoir' is marked at this location on earlier maps.

Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two emergency water tank is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S6) within the golf course at Hellesdon, centred on TG 2012 1118.
It measures 5.2 m square externally, and is similar in appearance to those recorded within the city centre (NHER 53527-53539).
A Cold War Royal Observer Corps post is recorded in a similar location (NHER 35393).
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.

May 2015. Walkover Survey.
Detailed walkover survey of Royal Norwich Golf Club undertaken ahead of its proposed redevelopment.
Although modern Ordnance Survey mapping still marks the location of this tank, a 1999 Google Earth image suggests it had been removed by this time. No physical traces of this structure are now visible at its recorded location, which has been heavily affected by a golf course green, a bunker and a series of terraced platforms for a tee.
It is suggested that the assumed World War Two provenance of the tank may be incorrect, as earlier maps clearly mark a square object labelled as a reservoir at the same location. Its function was presumably therefore actually related to the golf course.
See report (S8) for further details.
