Summary

Linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs are of doubtful archaeological significance. All are likely to represent drains, field boundaries and similar features of recent (late post medieval to modern) origin, although a greater significance for some of the features cannot be ruled out entirely.

Map

May 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks recorded below were previously recorded as part of NHER 19988.
Various linear cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), in a field centred at TG 1456 0861. Although some were previously thought to represent a rectangular enclosure (formerly recorded as part of NHER 19988), the features are more likely to relate to drains, field boundaries and other agricultural features of relatively recent origin. Some correspond wholly or partly with boundaries depicted on historic maps (such as Great Melton Enclosure Map (S4)), or fit the same pattern of enclosure. A modern field boundary was excavated at the southern end of the site (NHER 50486), but it has not been possible to identify a corresponding cropmark in this area. Due to their low archaeological significance, the cropmarks have not been mapped by the NMP.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 19 May 2010.
