Summary

A World War Two road block is visible as a group of ‘structures’ – lines of sockets in the road surface to take vertical rails, bent pins, or similar obstacles – on aerial photographs. The road block was one of numerous such defences erected on roads leading in and out of Norwich. Often these were sited strategically, as in this case, where the block was erected on the (southern) city side of the River Wensum, blocking access from Mile Cross Bridge.
