Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Two structures or buildings are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), on a plot of land centred at TG 2173 0948. They could relate to a World War Two ARP post recorded at this location (‘Post H7: Nelson Street School’) by a bibliographic source (S3). The small rectangular concrete structures are similar to the (usually single) buildings visible at other such posts in Norwich. They might alternatively be air raid shelters, Home Guard shelters or have performed some other function related to military or (more probably) civil defence; the ARP post might instead relate to the similar structure recorded 58m to the south (NHER 53437). The structures appear to be set within their own plot, which was being cultivated in 1945 (S2). In 1942 (S1) the northwest shelter may have been camouflaged by a covering of earth and/or vegetation, remnants of which may be visible in 1945 (S2).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 10 June 2010.
