Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The Nelson Street School (now Nelson First School), centred at TG 2165 0943, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S3) as a World War Two bomb site, with air raid shelters and temporary buildings. The changes that took place during the war are apparent across the different photographs, which span the years 1942-45. A bibliographic source records that, in 1942 at least, the school was used as a Rest/Feeding Centre (S4). The source also records that the school was bombed during the ‘Baedeker’ raids of the same year, a fact which is clearly apparent from the aerial photographs. Later aerial photographs indicate that subsequently temporary buildings were erected on the southeastern portion of the site (mapped by Extent of Area); these were accompanied by what appear to have been below-ground air raid shelters, only the entrances to which are visible. Further air raid shelters may have lain across the remainder of the site, but they are difficult to make out amongst the remains of the demolished school buildings.
