Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two barrage balloon site is visible as the balloon itself and a small number of possibly associated structures on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 2130 0837. The site is probably that recorded in a bibliographic source (S5) as Site 9, located on the CEYMS Sports Ground, 29 The Avenues. The approximate location of the central tethering point for the balloon (which may just be visible in 1945) has been mapped (at TG 2129 0836), along with an elongated concrete structure which is visible on post-war aerial photographs (such as (S6)) and may not be part of the balloon site. A number of huts are visible on the playing field (for example along its north side), but it is not clear whether these too are associated with the balloon site or were instead related to civilian activity; they have not been mapped by the NMP.
