Summary

Marks on the surface of the playground of what are now Avenue First and Middle schools, visible on 1940s aerial photographs, are probably the entrances to World War Two below-ground air raid shelters. Small surface structures within the playground (again visible on the aerial photographs) might also have been air raid shelters but cannot be distinguished from more mundane school outbuildings.

Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Marks on the surface of the playground of what are now Avenue First and Middle schools are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2158 0824. In common with similar features visible at other schools in Norwich, they probably represent the entrances to World War Two below-ground air raid shelters. Small surface structures within the playground (again visible on the aerial photographs) might also have been air raid shelters but cannot be distinguished from more mundane school outbuildings. The latter have not been mapped by the NMP; only the extent of the former has been mapped.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 15 June 2010.
