Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
World War Two military activity on Newmarket Road playing field is visible on 1940s aerial photographs - (S1)-(S6) and perhaps also (S7) - as structures/buildings and earthworks, centred at TG 2164 0701. A small concrete shelter with a protected entrance, possible gun and spigot mortar emplacements, a large pit or crater and a line of slit trenches or trench shelters along the southwestern field boundary are all visible. The site was probably used for training activity, perhaps by the Home Guard or a similar auxiliary or civil defence force; the small concrete building is similar to Home Guard shelters identified elsewhere in Norwich.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 18 June 2010.
