NHER 53273 (Monument record) - Air raid shelters and other World War Two features at Eaton (City of Norwich) School

Air raid shelters, an emergency water supply and signs of other, possibly military, World War Two activity are visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s and later aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), at what is now Eaton (City of Norwich) School, centred at TG 2173 0656. Numerous probable air raid shelters are visible, predominantly as the concrete covers and entrances to trench shelters or similar, although an elongated mound to the east of the main school building may also be a shelter. A probable emergency water supply, in the shape of a square embanked pond, is visible at the northeast corner of the site. Three elongated strips of concrete (or a similarly light-coloured material) in the southeast corner of the site, and a mound or emplacement near the southwest corner are more enigmatic. The latter could relate to the bomb crater described in NHER 13990 (see too NHER 53274). There are various signs of activity, possibly related to military training, visible across the southern part of the site, but these could instead reflect the use of this area for sport. Banger (2003, (S7)) records that the school was also the site of an air raid warning siren.
