Summary

The earthworks of a circular mound are visible on aerial photographs on Low Common alongside the River Wensum to the north of Ringland. Although it is possible that the mound relates to post medieval activity on the common, it is also feasible that it represents a Bronze Age round barrow. The location of barrows in low-lying river valley settings is an increasingly recognised phenomenon.

Full Description

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a circular mound are visible on aerial photographs on Low Common alongside the River Wensum to the north of Ringland (S1-S2). The mound is centred on TG 1434 1402 and measures up to 13m in diameter. The earthworks are clearest on the low light of January 1964 (S2). Although it is possible that the mound relates to post medieval activity on the common, it is also feasible that it represents a Bronze Age round barrow. The location of barrows in low-lying river valley settings is an increasingly recognised phenomenon.
