Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two pit, emplacement or bomb crater is visible as an earthwork and/or cropmark on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2170 0637. It lies on playing fields adjacent to the Eaton (City of Norwich) School, and may have been a World War Two defence such as an emplacement or weapons pit, probably constructed for practice: the area to its north may have been used for military training (NHER 53273) and its non-strategic location suggests that it is unlikely to have been a genuine defence. Alternatively it might represent a small bomb crater, perhaps relating to the bomb mentioned in NHER 13990. At the same time, it could instead be of non-World War Two date, simply a pit dug for some unrelated purpose. It might even be a small mound rather than a pit, as the photographs are not particularly clear.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 21 June 2010.
